Heparin Horrors

When a women in labor goes to the hospital, it's routine for her to be given a heparin lock, or heplock: this is a needle in the hand with heparin in it to keep blood from coagulating, and the open line makes it more convenient for nurses to hook up an IV.
Turns out heparin is made from Chinese pig intestines, and so far 21 people have died from some kind of as-yet-unidentified issue with the Baxter International brand.

There's actually no reason, beyond the convenience of the labor and delivery staff, to have a heplock or an IV, unless you have an epidural, a c-section or are severely dehydrated.

Munire crib recall

The CPSC has announced a voluntary recall of Munire brand cribs: the Majestic Curved Top and Flat Top, Essex, Brighton/Sussex and Captiva models.
